International students from more than 60 countries have been studying at I Horbachevsky Ternopil State Medical University for more than 10 years and their number is constantly increasing every year: 2-5 students at a course in 1997 to over 1,000 in 2012. The Foreign Students’ Faculty was created to improve organizational and educational work for international students. It consisted of 5 departments, including the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology № 2.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology № 2 of the Foreign Students’ Faculty was established on June 1, 2009 after the reorganization of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the Faculty of Medicine. That department was chaired by a young and enthusiastic specialist Professor Svitlana Heriak. MD. 4 Associated Professors Natalia Bahnii, Olena Stelmakh, Inna Korda, Natalia Petrenko, 1 assistant Professor Iryna Kuziv, laboratory assistants Olha Kislenko and Olesia Komarenets currently work at the department.

All teachers are fluent in the English and Russian languages and proficient in English.

What could the history of the recently created department be? However, for only 6 years the department has achieved a lot of to be proud of, thanks to the persistent work of its staff.

The training rooms have been repaired and proper facilities are now available for students’ studying and teachers’ work. The supplies of the department were replenished with modern equipment (computers, video-complex), that improved the quality of education for theoretical knowledge gaining and skills development.

4th, 5th, 6th year international students in Medicine, 4th year students in Dentistry, Bachelor’s degree 2nd , 3rd , 4th year students in Nursing, and Master’s degree students in Nursing (full-time and distance learning) are enrolled at the department. 4th year students study physiological obstetrics, 5th year students study pathological obstetrics and gynaecology, 6th year students study clinical obstetrics and gynaecology, the students of International Nursing School study nursing care for women during pregnancy, child delivery, in cases of postpartum and gynaecological disorders

Educational process is carried out in accordance with the programs approved by the Central Methodical Office of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine. The department staff has developed a powerful methodological support. The guidelines for students and teachers, materials for lectures and workshops, multimedia presentations of lectures, cases and exam test have been prepared for all cycles; Moodle test system have been also completely filled with tests. The staff works persistently to improve the methods and forms of learning involving innovative educational technologies, active forms of learning process. So, the students become more interested in gaining the knowledge, improvement of skills and development of clinical thinking due to the chosen profession.

Successful realization of the curriculum aims to raise a proficient and highly-skilled medical worker. Today it is possible because of the latest information and computer technologies and profound clinical supplies of the department. To practice theoretical knowledge some training case histories of ‘in-patient pregnant and maternity patients’ and ‘gynaecological patients’ have been prepared. The department staff is co-authors of a textbook on nursing skills. A methodological manual in obstetrics for international students is going to be published soon.

Student’s work at the patient’s bedside under the supervision of a teacher, the opportunity to study medical records thoroughly and further interpretation of clinical, laboratory and instrumental investigations help the students to find out the disorder, its causes, to predict and prevent possible complications and to suggest effective treatment options.

For quality training of rising medical workers it is very important to involve students into scientific researches. A scientific group is available at the department. 15 students train there to become scientists in the future. In 2011 a 4th year student gained a victory at the XV International Medical Congress of Students and Young Scientists. It proved the importance of students' scientific involvement. 3 PhD theses have been defended at the department. 3 clinical interns, 3 extended PhD students and 10 Master’s degree students are currently pursuing their degrees at the department.

Extra-genital pathology in obstetrics and gynaecology; management of pregnant women with placenta dysfunction; diagnostics of antiphospholipid syndrome; study of thrombotic and haemorrhagic disorders which cause the miscarriage; diagnosis, treatment and prevention of inflammatory and infectious diseases of muliebria: tumour markers of muliebria; endocrine gynaecology; technique of delivery management at the family delivery room; pathological and premature delivery; gestosis; endometriosis development after delivery and C-section; vaginal delivery management after C-section are the topical issues of the department researches.

Since 2009, the department staff has been working on research on “Development and implementation of effective techniques and means of diagnostics, management and prevention of women's reproductive health disorders and foetus perinatal health.”

New methods of treatment of inflammatory diseases of muliebria, peroxidation disorders in pregnant women with subclinical hypothyroidism, anaemia, extra-genital pathology, foetoplacental dysfunction in the pregnant, foetal growth retardation syndrome, prevention of foetal distress in women with metabolic disorders, prevention of preterm rupture of membranes in women with risk for miscarriage, management of pregnant women with hypertension with underlying lipid metabolism disorders depending on the hemodynamic types of circulation, birth chanal preparation for delivery, management of premature delivery in membrane rupture to delivery interval, prevention of bleeding in the early postpartum period, prevention of septic complications in women after obstetric surgeries, correction of menopausal disorders in women with benign uterine tumours, etc. have been developed due to the researches conducted. Their results are presented in 4 advisory circulars and 10 implementation statements.

The research achievements were presented in many international, national and regional scientific forums, conferences, congresses, were published in the scientific literature, were also implemented into maternity facilities of the region and Ukraine. To implement the new methods of diagnosis, treatment and prevention of obstetric and gynaecological pathology the regional and district scientific conferences were held at the department, which the leading experts of Ukraine participated in.

The department is based in the Regional Clinical Perinatal Centre “Mother and Child”, III level of medical facility providing care for women and newborns, which has an extensive experience in management of obstetric and gynaecological disorders in the city and region. The department staff is involved into the implementation of European standards on mother and child assistance; the perinatal centre was designated as a "Baby Friendly Hospital".

The future prospects of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology №2 are: professional development of young, enthusiastic researchers who have already had some scientific achievements in obstetrics and gynaecology; further expansion and implementation of information technologies into the educational process to ensure continuous communication between teacher and student, phantom equipment for improvement of students’ skills, motivation of students to gain knowledge and develop skills in contemporary medicine due to the accumulation, systematization, analysis, saving and use of information from various sources, to deepen their knowledge and improve skills by persistent self-development to become highly qualified doctors. The new methods of diagnostics and management of obstetric and gynaecological disorders are implemented and the department staff improves their skills on specific obstetric or gynaecological pathology in the leading medical centres of Ukraine and Europe for further development of current aspects in obstetric care of females.
